Glenelg, in short

Glenelg is where the colony was proclaimed, under the Old Gum Tree in Glenelg North on 28 December 1836, and it has been Adelaide's beach ever since. The tram from the city ends at Moseley Square by the jetty, Jetty Road runs back from it with the shops and restaurants, and the Esplanade, the marina at Holdfast Shores and the Patawalonga stretch north toward the Old Gum Tree and West Beach. Glenelg East and Glenelg South are the quieter streets behind, Somerton Park and Brighton run down the coast, and Novar Gardens and Morphettville sit inland.

It is about ten kilometres south-west of the city, and we come out along Anzac Highway most weeks for jobs across the Bay.

The houses, and what they need

Glenelg is three suburbs in one. The 1920s bungalows and 1950s brick homes on the original blocks, with a narrow driveway strip that has flaked, sunk and gone white with salt. The 1960s and 70s unit blocks that fill whole streets near the beach, with a shared driveway that carries ten cars a day and a footpath the residents have been tripping on for years. And the rebuilds: two and three-storey homes on narrow blocks a street or two from the sand, with a double garage that needs a proper drive, a courtyard, and often a plunge pool.

So the Glenelg job list is driveways, a lot of them pale and a lot of them shared; unit block footpaths, ramps and stairs with handrails; pool surrounds and courtyards on the rebuilds; and the occasional garage or studio slab on the deeper blocks toward Glenelg East.

The ground under Glenelg

Glenelg is sand: the coastal dune system, with the old Patawalonga swamp ground behind it toward Glenelg North and Novar Gardens. Sand drains fast, which is good, but it shifts and settles, and a slab poured straight onto it moves with it. Every Glenelg slab we pour sits on a compacted rubble base, with mesh mid-slab and joints at tight centres, and habitable slabs are engineered to the block's soil class, which on the old swamp ground can surprise people.

Then there's the salt and the sun. Sea air and spray eat ordinary sealers and etch bare concrete, and a dark driveway a street from the beach is painful barefoot by November. We steer every Glenelg job to a pale finish, seal it with a coastal-grade product, and tell you when to reseal. Space is the last thing: narrow blocks and neighbours a metre away mean the truck often can't get near the pour, so we plan the pump and the timing at the quote.

The council, and getting to you

Glenelg is in the City of Holdfast Bay. The strip between your boundary and the road is theirs, so a new or widened crossover needs a permit, has to be poured to their specification, and may be inspected; the council also looks after the Norfolk pines and street trees along the beach streets. We prepare and lodge the application, pour to the spec and book the inspection, all inside the quote. For a unit block we work with the body corporate on access and timing.

We're at the Bay most weeks, so a measure and quote in Glenelg is usually within a few days of your call, and a job is usually booked one to three weeks out depending on the weather and the pour schedule.
