Why Henley Beach calls us

The concreter Henley Beach calls for the coast

A Henley Beach concreter has to think about sand under the slab, salt over it, and bare feet across it in February. We've poured to all three.

Cool and pale

Coastal white and oatmeal exposed aggregate, or honed on a cream base: the finishes that stay bearable barefoot and suit a beach house.

Built for the sand

Coastal sand drains fast but shifts. A compacted base, mesh mid-slab and joints at tight centres keep a slab flat while the sand moves under it.

Sealed for the salt

Sea air and spray eat cheap sealers. Every decorative finish at the beach gets a coastal-grade sealer and a reseal plan that suits it.

Charles Sturt crossovers

The verge is council land and needs a permit and their specification. We lodge it, pour to it and book the inspection.

Concreting in Henley Beach

Concreting in Henley Beach: what's different here

A beachside suburb of bungalows and rebuilds on the western sand, where a concreter has to think about sand, salt and bare feet before the truck arrives.

Henley Beach, in short

Henley Beach is about eleven kilometres west of the city on the metropolitan coast. Henley Square and the jetty are the centre of it, with the pubs, cafes and the surf club along the Esplanade, and the Torrens reaches the sea just to the south at Henley Beach South through Breakout Creek and the Linear Park trail. Grange and its jetty are next door to the north, West Beach and the golf course to the south, and Fulham and Fulham Gardens behind.

It has gone from a modest beach suburb to one of the western suburbs' most sought-after streets in a generation, and the building work shows it. We come out along Henley Beach Road or Grange Road most weeks.

The houses, and what they need

Two kinds of house sit side by side here. The 1920s bungalows and 1950s and 60s brick homes on the original blocks, with a narrow driveway strip down the side that has flaked, sunk and gone white with salt over the decades. And the new two-storey rebuilds, rendered and glazed, that have taken the old blocks a street or two back from the beach, with a double garage that needs a proper drive, an alfresco, and more often than not a pool.

So the Henley Beach job list is driveways, a lot of them in the pale finishes that suit the beach; pool surrounds and alfrescos on the rebuilds; side paths and entries on the bungalows; and granny flat and studio slabs on the deeper blocks back toward Fulham.

The ground under Henley Beach

Henley Beach is sand: the coastal dune system, with the old Torrens delta and swamp ground behind it toward Fulham. Sand drains fast, which is good, but it shifts and settles, and a slab poured straight onto it moves with it. Every Henley Beach slab we pour sits on a compacted rubble base, with mesh mid-slab and joints at tight centres, and habitable slabs are engineered to the block's soil class, which on the old swamp ground behind the dunes can surprise people.

Then there's the salt and the sun. Sea air and spray eat ordinary sealers and etch bare concrete, and a dark driveway a street from the beach is painful barefoot by November. We steer every Henley Beach job to a pale finish, seal it with a coastal-grade product, and tell you when to reseal.

The council, and getting to you

Henley Beach is in the City of Charles Sturt. The strip between your boundary and the road is theirs, so a new or widened crossover needs a permit, has to be poured to their specification, and may be inspected. The council also looks after the Norfolk pines and street trees along the beach streets, and we work around them. We prepare and lodge the application, pour to the spec and book the inspection, all inside the quote.

We're on the western beaches most weeks, so a measure and quote in Henley Beach is usually within a few days of your call, and a job is usually booked one to three weeks out depending on the weather and the pour schedule.

Built for Henley Beach

Poured for Henley Beach's sand, salt and summer sun

Coastal sand drains but shifts. A compacted base, mesh mid-slab and joints at tight centres keep a slab flat while the sand settles under it.

Salt air and spray eat cheap sealers, and a dark surface a street from the beach is painful barefoot. Pale finishes and a coastal-grade sealer are standard here.

The City of Charles Sturt has its own crossover specification and looks after the beach-street trees. We've poured to it many times, and we lodge the permit for you.

FAQ

Concreting in Henley Beach, answered

Are you a local concreter in Henley Beach?

We're an Adelaide-wide crew that's on the western beaches most weeks, which is the useful kind of local: we know the sand under the slab, the salt over it, the bungalow driveways and the rebuilds, and the Charles Sturt crossover spec. We've poured on streets across Henley Beach, Grange and Fulham.

Do you service all of Henley Beach?

Yes: Henley Beach, Henley Beach South, Grange, Tennyson, West Beach, Fulham, Fulham Gardens, Kidman Park, Lockleys, Seaton and Findon. If you're anywhere on the western beaches, call and we'll confirm.

Which finish is best near the beach?

Pale exposed aggregate with white quartz or cream pebble. It stays cool underfoot in summer, the stone grips when wet, and it hides blown sand and salt marks. Honed concrete on a cream base is the seamless alternative for a modern rebuild. We'd steer you away from charcoal a street from the beach.

Does salt air damage concrete?

Over years, yes: it attacks bare concrete and cheap sealers, and shows up as flaking and white staining. We use a coastal-grade sealer on every decorative finish at the beach and recommend resealing every two to three years, sooner in full sun.

Is sand a problem under a driveway?

Only if you pour straight onto it. Sand drains well but shifts and settles, so every Henley Beach slab gets a compacted rubble base, mesh in the middle and joints at tight spacing. The old swamp ground behind the dunes toward Fulham is different again, and habitable slabs there are engineered to the soil test.

Do you do pool surrounds in Henley Beach?

Yes, and it's one of our most common jobs here as pools go in with the rebuilds. Pale exposed aggregate or honed on a cream base, a fall away from the coping to a strip drain, a salt-resistant sealer with a non-slip additive, and the fence spigot holes cored for the fencer.

Do I need a council permit for my driveway?

Only for the crossover, the section between your boundary and the road. That's council land, so it needs a permit and has to be poured to the City of Charles Sturt's specification. We prepare the application, lodge it and book the inspection, all inside the quote.

Can you match a new driveway to a rendered rebuild?

Yes. Honed concrete on a cream or natural grey base, or a coastal white exposed aggregate, both sit well against white render and black frames. We bring sealed samples so you can hold them against the house and stand on them in the sun.

How soon can you start a job in Henley Beach?

A measure and quote is usually within a few days of your call, and a job is usually booked one to three weeks out. If you have a pool builder, a fencer or a builder waiting, tell us the date and we'll work to it.

Do you take away the old concrete?

Yes. Breaking out the old driveway, path or slab and carting it away is part of every quote, along with sweeping and hosing the site before we leave.

Ready when you are

Ready for a driveway or pool deck you can walk on in February?

Tell us the street and the job, and Henley Beach's concreters will come out, measure up and bring the samples. A written quote with dates, usually within a couple of days. No pressure and no obligation.

We had three quotes and these guys were the only ones who explained how they'd deal with the fall and the clay. The drive was poured, cut and sealed in under a week, and it still looks like the day they left.

Our old driveway was cracked and lifting. The team broke it out, re-prepped the base and poured a new one inside two days. Dead level, and not a mark left on the garden.

The exposed aggregate came up beautifully — exactly the finish we picked. On time, tidy every afternoon, and the price never moved from the quote.

They poured our shed slab and the paths around the house. Straight edges, perfect fall, no puddling after the first big rain. Would use them again without hesitation.

Quoted a fixed price, stuck to it, and cleaned the street down before they left. Communication was excellent the whole way through.

Poured the slab for our new build on a sloping block. Set out perfectly, and the builder said it was the best prep he'd seen this year.
