Port Adelaide, in short
Port Adelaide was laid out in 1840 as the colony's working harbour and it still looks like one: the wharves and Hart's Mill on the river, the lighthouse at Queen's Wharf, the Maritime Museum and the Railway Museum, the pubs along Commercial Road and St Vincent Street, and the dolphins in the Port River. Birkenhead Bridge crosses to the Lefevre Peninsula and Semaphore, Largs Bay and the beach; Alberton Oval and the Port Adelaide Football Club are a few streets east; and the old wool stores and docks are turning into townhouses and apartments at Dock One and along the waterfront.

The houses, and what they need
The Port and the streets around it are some of the oldest housing in Adelaide: stone and brick workers' cottages from the 1870s on, bluestone and limestone villas, and 1920s bungalows, a lot of them heritage-listed or in heritage areas, on narrow blocks with a single-car drive down the side and sometimes a rear lane. Semaphore and Largs Bay add the 1950s and 60s brick homes and the unit blocks along the beach. The new townhouses at Dock One, Rosewater and Alberton are the other end of the scale, with shared driveways and small courtyards.
