Why Norwood calls us
The concreter Norwood calls for a character home
A Norwood concreter has to fit a truck down a rear lane, pour a finish that suits bluestone, and satisfy a council that looks after a lot of heritage. We've done all three, many times.
We know the villas
Bluestone villas with iron lace, symmetrical cottages, 1920s bungalows in Kensington, townhouses in Kent Town. We've poured the drives, courtyards and lane aprons on all of them.
Laneways and tight access
Half of Norwood's driveways come off a rear lane a truck can't get down. We pump, we barrow, and we pour a lane apron that copes with the bins and the neighbours.
Finishes that suit the house
Natural grey exposed aggregate against bluestone, honed on a cream base behind a renovated villa. We bring sealed samples so you can hold them against the wall.
Norwood Payneham & St Peters crossovers
The verge is council land and needs a permit and their specification, and the heritage streets have their own rules. We lodge it, pour to it and book the inspection.

“The exposed aggregate came up beautifully against the bluestone, exactly the colour we picked from the sample. They got the truck sorted for our lane, were tidy every afternoon, and the council side of it just happened. On time and exactly as quoted.”
Concreting in Norwood
Concreting in Norwood: what's different here
Adelaide's first suburb outside the city, all bluestone and plane trees a few streets from The Parade, where a concreter has to think about access, the house and the council before the truck arrives.
Norwood, in short
Norwood is three kilometres east of the city, laid out in the 1840s and, with Kensington, the first municipality outside Adelaide. The Parade is its spine, a kilometre and a half of shops, cafes and restaurants running from Fullarton Road to Portrush Road, with the Norwood Town Hall and the Concert Hall in the middle and Norwood Oval, home of the Redlegs, just north of it. Magill Road and Kensington Road mark the edges; Kent Town, Stepney and Maylands sit to the north and west, Kensington and Marryatville to the east, and Rose Park to the south.
It is one of Adelaide's most walkable and most protected suburbs, with heritage and character overlays across most of its residential streets. We come in along Magill Road or The Parade most weeks.
The houses, and what they need
Norwood's houses are the reason people move here: 1870s and 80s bluestone villas with iron lacework, symmetrical cottages and row cottages on narrow blocks, 1920s bungalows toward Kensington, and the townhouses and apartments that have filled in around Kent Town and The Parade. A lot of the older blocks have a rear lane, and a lot of driveways are a single strip down one side that the house has outgrown, if there is a driveway at all.
So the Norwood job list is villa driveways widened to the fence line where the frontage allows; carport and garage aprons off the rear lanes; side paths between the house and the fence; rear courtyards and alfrescos as the villas are opened up at the back; and the slabs for the extensions, studios and plunge pools going in behind them.
The ground under Norwood
Norwood sits on the Adelaide plains clay, the reactive ground under most of the inner suburbs: it swells through a wet winter and shrinks through a dry summer, and the cracks in a century of villa footings show what it does to anything poured without allowance for it. Every Norwood slab we pour gets a compacted rubble base, mesh sitting mid-slab on chairs, and saw-cut joints at tight centres so the movement shows up as a straight line rather than a crack. Extension slabs are engineered to the block's soil class and inspected before the pour, and where a slab meets old footings we put a proper joint between them.
Access is the other Norwood question. Narrow blocks, rear lanes and street trees mean the concrete truck often can't get near the pour, so we bring a pump or barrow it, and we plan that at the quote rather than on the day.
The council, and getting to you
Norwood is in the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters, a council that looks after a lot of heritage. The strip between your boundary and the road is theirs, so a new or widened crossover needs a permit, has to be poured to their specification, and is inspected; in the heritage and character areas there are also rules about frontages, fences and the plane trees. We prepare and lodge the application, pour to the spec and book the inspection, all inside the quote, and we'll tell you at the measure if an overlay changes what's possible.
We're in the inner east most weeks, so a measure and quote in Norwood is usually within a few days of your call, and a job is usually booked one to three weeks out depending on the weather and the pour schedule.

Built for Norwood
Poured for Norwood's clay, lanes and heritage streets
The inner-east clay swells and shrinks with the seasons. A compacted base, mesh mid-slab and joints at tight centres keep a driveway flat, and a proper joint separates a new slab from century-old footings.
Rear lanes and narrow blocks keep the truck out. We plan the pump or the barrow at the quote, and pour lane aprons that cope with the bins.
The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters has its own crossover specification and heritage rules. We've poured to both many times, and we lodge the permit for you.
FAQ
Concreting in Norwood, answered
Are you a local concreter in Norwood?
We're an Adelaide-wide crew that's in the inner east most weeks, which is the useful kind of local: we know the villa driveways, the rear lanes, the clay and the council's crossover and heritage rules, and we've poured on streets across Norwood, Kensington and Kent Town.
Do you service all of Norwood?
Yes: Norwood, Kensington, Kent Town, Stepney, Maylands, Marden, Payneham, St Peters, College Park, Beulah Park, Kensington Park, Marryatville, Trinity Gardens and Rose Park. If you're anywhere in the inner east, call and we'll confirm.
My driveway is off a rear lane. Can you get a truck in?
Usually not, and it doesn't matter. We bring a concrete pump or barrow the pour from the nearest point the truck can reach, and we plan it at the quote so there are no surprises on the day. Lane aprons get a thicker edge to cope with bins and turning cars.
Can you widen the driveway beside my villa?
Usually. Most villa strips have room to widen to the fence line at the front, and further where the block opens up behind the house. We measure it at the quote and tell you what fits. In a heritage or character area the council may have a say on the frontage, and we'll flag that first.
Which finish suits a bluestone villa?
Natural grey exposed aggregate sits well against bluestone and hides plane tree litter and tyre marks. Oatmeal suits the sandstone ones. For a renovated villa, honed concrete on a cream base runs from the new kitchen out to the courtyard. We bring sealed samples so you can hold them against the stone.
Do I need a council permit for my driveway?
Only for the crossover, the section between your boundary and the road. That's council land, so it needs a permit and has to be poured to the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters' specification, and they inspect it. In a heritage area there can be extra conditions. We prepare the application, lodge it and book the inspection, all inside the quote.
Will the plane trees be a problem?
They can be. Plane tree roots are the reason a lot of Norwood driveways failed. We cut back what we can, install a root barrier where it will help, and pour over a compacted base so the new slab bridges minor movement. If a tree is going to win regardless, we'll tell you.
Do you pour slabs for villa extensions?
Yes. Extension, studio and garage slabs behind the villas are common Norwood work. They're engineered to the block's soil class, poured over a vapour barrier with the plumbing set through, jointed against the old footings, and inspected by the certifier before the pour.
How soon can you start a job in Norwood?
A measure and quote is usually within a few days of your call, and a job is usually booked one to three weeks out. If you have a builder waiting on an extension slab, tell us the date and we'll work to it.
Do you take away the old concrete?
Yes. Breaking out the old driveway, path or slab and carting it away is part of every quote, along with sweeping and hosing the site before we leave.
Ready when you are
Ready to give the villa a driveway, a courtyard or a lane apron that works?
Tell us the street and the job, and Norwood's concreters will come out, measure up and bring the samples. A written quote with dates, usually within a couple of days. No pressure and no obligation.
