Prospect, in short
Prospect is five kilometres north of the city, one of the first suburbs laid out beyond North Adelaide and a council in its own right since 1872. Prospect Road runs through the middle of it with the shops, cafes and the Payinthi civic centre and library; Prospect Oval, home of the North Adelaide Football Club, sits off Menzies Crescent; and the Prospect Memorial Gardens, Churchill Road and Main North Road mark its edges. Nailsworth, Broadview, Collinswood and Fitzroy are its neighbours, and Medindie and Walkerville sit to the east.
It is a walking, tree-lined, front-verandah kind of suburb, and a lot of its streets are protected as heritage or character areas. We come in along Main North Road or Prospect Road most weeks.
The houses, and what they need
Prospect's housing is the Adelaide character catalogue: 1880s bluestone and sandstone villas with return verandahs, 1900s cottages, 1920s bungalows, a few Tudors in Broadview and Nailsworth, and 1950s cream brick homes on the northern edge. Almost all of them came with a single-car driveway strip down one side, poured or paved for a 1920s car, and it has cracked, lifted on the plane tree and jacaranda roots, and never suited a modern car or two.
So the Prospect job list is driveways widened to the fence line where the frontage allows, with a finish that suits the stone; side paths between the house and the fence; rear courtyards and alfrescos as the villas are renovated and opened up at the back; and the slabs for the extensions, studios and plunge pools going in behind them.
The ground under Prospect
Prospect sits on the Adelaide plains clay, the same reactive ground as most of the inner suburbs: it swells through a wet winter and shrinks through a dry summer, and a hundred years of villa footings show what that does to anything poured without allowance for it. Every Prospect slab we pour gets a compacted rubble base, mesh sitting mid-slab on chairs, and saw-cut joints at tight centres so the movement shows up as a straight line rather than a crack. Extension slabs are engineered to the block's soil class and inspected before the pour, and where a slab meets old footings we put a proper joint between them.
The trees matter here too. Prospect's streets are lined with plane trees and jacarandas, and a lot of driveways have failed on their roots. We cut back what we can, put in a root barrier where it will help, and tell you when the tree will win regardless.

Prospect is its own council, the City of Prospect, and it takes the streetscape seriously. The strip between your boundary and the road is theirs, so a new or widened crossover needs a permit, has to be poured to their specification, and is inspected; in the heritage and character areas there are also rules about frontages, fences and street trees.
