Salisbury, in short

Salisbury was laid out by John Harvey in 1847, which makes it one of the first towns in the colony, and it grew into a city of its own after the war when the Housing Trust built thousands of homes for the workers at the weapons research establishment up the road. Today it is the centre of the City of Salisbury: Parabanks and the Salisbury Interchange on John Street, the Community Hub and Pitman Park beside the Little Para River, Salisbury Oval, and the linear park trail that follows the river through the middle of the suburb.

North of the railway line is RAAF Base Edinburgh and the defence precinct; south is Mawson Lakes and Parafield Airport; out west along Port Wakefield Road are the St Kilda mangroves and the adventure playground. We cross all of it to get to jobs, and we've poured concrete within sight of most of it.

The houses, and what they need

Three generations of housing sit side by side here. Salisbury North and the streets around the town centre are largely 1950s and 60s Housing Trust homes: cream brick, tiled roof, a big block, and a narrow original driveway that has cracked, lifted at the crossover and never suited two cars. Salisbury Heights, East and Park are 1970s and 80s brick veneer with double garages and sheds. Paralowie, Parafield Gardens and Burton are 1990s onward, where the granny flats and pools are going in now.

That mix is why the Salisbury job list looks the way it does: driveway replacements more than anything, usually widened to a double and carried across a new crossover; shed and workshop slabs on the big backyards; granny flat slabs with the plumbing set through them; and side paths and back-door landings replacing the cracked strips the Housing Trust laid seventy years ago.

The ground under Salisbury

Salisbury sits on the northern Adelaide plains: flat, and built on the clay the Little Para has been spreading across them for a very long time. Most blocks test as moderately to highly reactive, which means the ground swells through a wet winter and shrinks through a dry summer, and a slab poured straight onto it cracks within a couple of seasons. Flat has its own catch: with no slope to help, the fall that keeps water off the garage and away from the house has to be built into the formwork, and on the lower ground toward the river and Paralowie that fall and a strip drain are what stop a driveway becoming a pond.

So every Salisbury slab we pour gets a compacted rubble base, mesh sitting mid-slab on chairs, saw-cut joints at tight centres so the clay's movement shows up as a straight line rather than a crack, and a fall we set before the truck arrives. Habitable slabs are engineered to the block's soil class and inspected before the pour.

The council, and getting to you

The strip between your boundary and the road belongs to the City of Salisbury, so a new or widened crossover needs a permit, has to be poured to the council's specification, and is inspected.
